There are lots of restaurants in Kruger National Park. Each main rest camp has one and they’re convenient places to stop at for breakfast, lunch or dinner.
Opening hours don’t extend beyond these meal times, so you wouldn’t be able to get a midnight snack from one of them!
They’ll generally have indoor and outdoor seating, often with a large covered section, such as a thatched roof, to keep off the hot sun or a summer downpour.
They also often have river views or a nice bush setting. They aren’t terribly formal and you certainly don’t have to dress up in your after eight evening wear. Diners wear casual day clothes.
They’re licensed, so you’ll be able to buy beer, wine and liqueur at them.
The cost of eating at one of them is inexpensive.
You can book a table in advance if there’s a particular spot you’d like to sit, but otherwise booking would normally be unnecessary.
The type of food that’s served on the menu is general fare, such as:
- Curry
- Fish and chips
- Hamburgers
- Pizza
- Salads
- Toasted sandwiches

*The Selati Station Grillhouse is a unique place to eat. It’s set around an old train that used to take tourists to Kruger National Park for their safaris. It’s well worth looking at if you’re in Skukuza, even if you don’t eat there.
Two of the picnic sites, Tshokwane and Nkuhlu, also have cafes.
In addition to these eating places, most of these camps offer boma braais, which are BBQ nights under an open-sided round thatched structure. If you’re interested in one of them, ask about it at the rest camp’s reception.
