If you’re travelling as a group, each person can use a bird list to mark off what they’ve seen. At the end of the day, compare your lists to see who’s seen the most bird species.
There are around 500 bird species in the park. Keeping track of what you have and haven’t seen without using a bird list can really test your memory!

If you’re looking for another bird list, rest camps sell guide books which have a short checklist in the back of Kruger National Park common birds and animals. The rest of the guide book is filled with maps, park information and animal and bird pictures.
If you want a full bird list, the rest camp shops also sell lists about birds in Southern Africa. Although the lists have more birds on them than what you’ll see in Kruger National Park, many of the birds are found in the park.
Some of the bird lists let you mark off what you’ve spotted on multiple trips. Next to each bird listing there are a number of columns. You can use one for each trip.
If you have a bird identification guide book, like SASOL Birds Of Southern Africa, it’s good to get the bird checklist that matches your book. Each bird is numbered according to the book and you can easily cross reference them.
Even if you’re not a seasoned bird watcher, getting a bird list adds an extra dimension to your Kruger National Park safari.
